In tackling what could be a complex subject for the children to understand, we chose to utilise a wonderful old favourite children’s song – The Old Woman Who Swallowed a Fly.

Using the song as the starting point for the lesson, discussion can be generated – although the lyrics get a bit silly towards the end (and that is half the fun!) there is also a lot of material that can stimulate thinking about food chains…spiders DO after all catch flies!

Attached you will find our lesson plan for the ELP provision. It is aimed at pre-level A children with extremely limited literacy skills.
